Hi, I’m Maggie Whitmore, a home styling enthusiast, avid DIYer, and the creative voice behind Cottage & Pine. I’m happiest around old wood with a little patina, worn brass that has seen a few decades, and rooms that feel like they’ve been lived in and loved for a long time.
If you’ve ever brought home a thrifted piece with good bones and a questionable finish, we’re probably going to get along. My rule of thumb is simple: start with what you can find and afford, then make it yours. At the thrift store, you’ll find me in the furniture aisle tapping side panels for solid wood, checking for wobble, and walking away from anything that feels too flimsy to earn its keep.
This space is for anyone who wants a warm home without the pressure to make it perfect. Think muddy boots by the door, fresh linens on the line, and a cup of coffee set down on a table that already has a few stories in it. Most of my projects start small and stay sensible, usually in the thrift-store range where a piece is worth the effort, but not so precious you’re afraid to use it.
Where it began
I grew up in a small town in upstate New York, the kind where the pace slows down when the weather turns and everyone knows which barns are full of treasures. Some of my favorite memories are tagging along with my grandmother to estate sales and antique barns. She had a gift for spotting the good bones in a beat-up chair or a dusty mirror, and she taught me that old is not the same thing as done.
Those weekends shaped the way I see homes now. Instead of focusing on chipped paint and wobbly legs, it became natural to picture what something could become with a little patience, a bit of sanding, and a good story to go with it.
The cottage
In my twenties, I poured my heart into transforming a neglected cottage into a budget-friendly farmhouse retreat. It was a slow project, not a glossy makeover, and definitely not instant. It was more like a slow friendship with the house.
Based on neighbor lore and the bits of information I could track down, the cottage is likely early 1900s, which meant uneven floors, quirky corners, and plenty of surprises hiding behind trim. Between painting, patching, and thrift-store treasure hunts, I learned as I went, usually with paint on my hands and a growing pile of “I cannot believe I’m doing this myself” moments.
That cottage is where I really discovered what I love most: mixing vintage charm with modern farmhouse practicality so a home can be both beautiful and livable.
What you’ll find here
At Cottage & Pine, my mission is simple: to help you create a comforting, character-filled home without a massive budget. The most beautiful spaces are layered with history, natural textures, and a lot of heart.
Whether you are styling a whole house, renting a small apartment, or just trying to make your entryway feel a little more welcoming, you’ll find ideas that work in real life. Expect step-by-step tutorials and before-and-after projects that share what I used, what I spent, and what I would do differently next time. I’m a practical DIYer, not a contractor, so I stick to approachable projects and tools you can actually live with.

My style
Farmhouse and rustic are the home base, but always with breathing room. I lean more vintage than trendy, and more warm cream than stark white. Picture a worn pine tabletop you do not have to fuss over, linen that gets softer every wash, and baskets that do the unglamorous work of holding everyday clutter. The palette stays close to nature: creamy whites, warm woods, and the kind of black accents that make a room feel grounded.
What matters most is soul. A hand-me-down dresser with a few dents. A flea market stool that is sturdy as can be. A vintage frame that does not match a thing, but somehow makes everything feel right.
If you take one thing from Cottage & Pine, let it be this: a cozy home is built in layers, over time. You do not need to do it all at once, and you do not need to do it perfectly.
